Thanks for visiting Chilton Bee Company. We have been beekeepers for 10 years now and manage around 400 to 450 colonies. We take a lot of pride in our products and the bees that we produce. If you have purchased from us in the past I want to thank you for your business.
Our Product
Our bees are highly mite-resistant, very hygienic and heavily possess Russian genetics. We originally began with very hygienic bees and although not originally our intent, we have never treated our bees for mites. We did have a fair amount of losses for a couple of Winters, but as time went on our survivors became resilient in their own defense against Varroa mites. Our mite washes now consistently measure at around 1% mite counts in August and September.
One common myth about Russian bees is that they are more aggressive than other bees. While an aggressive hive comes along here and there with any type of bees, Russians are no more aggressive than any other bees. They overwinter very well with a much smaller cluster than Italians will have, and therefore utilize a much smaller amount of stored resources, but they also build up at a faster rate once natural resources are available. For beekeepers with pollination contracts, these bees can be manipulated earlier by using pollen patties and syrup. Our colonies are inspected for health yearly by the State of Alabama Apiary Protection Unit and we also participate in the USDA APHIS Honey Bee Pests & Disease Survey.
